Qur’an Audio CD Distribution in All Prisons of New Zealand
Project Title: Guidance Behind Bars – Qur’an Audio for Prisoners
Objective:
To provide Muslim inmates, and those exploring Islam, with the opportunity to listen to the recitation of the Qur’an, helping them find peace, guidance, and reflection during their imprisonment.
Rationale:
- Many inmates experience loneliness, regret, and a search for meaning. The Qur’an provides spiritual solace and direction.
- Not all prisoners can read Arabic or English well, so audio resources are more accessible.
- Supporting Muslim prisoners contributes to their rehabilitation, reformation, and spiritual growth.
Activities:
- Produce high-quality Qur’an audio CDs (in Arabic with English translation).
- Seek prison authority approval for distribution.
- Work with prison chaplains and Islamic chaplaincy services.
- Deliver CDs to every prison in New Zealand, starting with high-inmate Muslim populations (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch).
- Offer optional follow-up: provide tafseer booklets, Islamic literature, and chaplain visits.
Expected Impact:
- Increased spiritual well-being of Muslim prisoners.
- Opportunity for non-Muslim inmates to engage with Islam.
- Strengthened Islamic identity and rehabilitation of inmates.
Budget Estimate:
- Audio CD production (1000–2000 units).
- Packaging with explanatory leaflet.
- Distribution & postage costs.
Sustainability:
- Expand later to MP3 players or digital access where allowed.
- Continuous chaplain engagement for follow-up learning.
